My friend BJ just sent me a link to a story about a woman in Cleveland who just turned 119.

That’s amazing to me. The story says the woman, Rebecca Lanier, is the daughter of former slaves and has outlived her children. She’s believed to be the oldest woman living, and the Social Security Administration co-signs that claim, but the (bastards) at Guinness World Records won’t acknowledge this claim because she doesn’t own a birth certificate (this kind of documentation wasn’t issued to blacks at the time she was born). Born in the 1890s, imagine how much this incredible woman has seen in her lifetime, and to not gain recognition simply because of the circumstances surrounding her birth is a damn shame.

Celebrate her life, celebrate the lives of all our grandmothers, and celebrate every day of yours.
